Military of the Ottoman Empire

Typical Soldiers:
The typical soldier wore in a sense uniform dress, and carried many firearms but preferred melee weapons. They wore overcoats, and carried many swords for close up combat. Had leather boots and wore many silk items.

Role of the Military in Society:
The military had a role in many ways with the empire. The military protects the entire empire and are the ones who fight in the large scale wars. The military took in people from the schools starting at the age of 25. People who joined the military would start in the infant part called the Janassaries.
Two Famous Battles:
One famous battle that the Ottoman Empire took part in was the Battle of Bapheus. This was a battle fought against the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantine sent in 2,000 troops half of which were recently hired Alan mercenaries. This army of 2,000 was met at the plain of Bapheus by an army of 5,000 light cavalry and led by the leader of the Ottoman Empire Osman. The Ottoman army including some of the Turkish tribe members charged at the Byzantine troops an pushed them far back. This was the first major victory of the Ottoman Empire.
Another famous battle the Ottoman Empire took part in was the Battle of Zonchio. This battle was fought between the Ottoman and the Republic of Venice. This battle was the first time cannons were used on ships. The Ottoman's army consisted of 67 galleys, 20 galliots, and circa 200 small vessels. Venice's army consisted of 47 galleys, 17 galliots, and circa 100 small vessels. The Venetian captured two Ottoman ships but while they were looting the Ottomans went back and recaptured it. At the most critical part of the war the Venetians boarded one of the commander ships of the Ottoman fleets. The end result of the battle was the Ottomans won.
